PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAM

The philosophy of the Vocational Nursing Program is consistent with the philosophy of California Career Institute (CCI) which believes that learning is a continuous, dynamic, and interactive process that takes place in an atmosphere of mutual respect and helpfulness.  We believe in lifelong learning and the provision of safe, compassionate, quality nursing care to individuals, families and communities. We believe in providing educational access to people from all ethnic backgrounds as well as pre-entry preparation for those with special educational needs.

We believe that, man is a holistic being--including body, mind, and spirit, living within an ethnic cultural context--and that man move through predictable developmental stages throughout life. What effects any aspect of one's being affects the whole. The human being is a dynamic organism with capabilities for responding positively to a changing environment. People are members of societies having needs for interaction, which influence their state of health.

We believe that, health is a continuum between wellness and illness.  Wellness is a state of being able to function optimally within a social and cultural context. Illness is a state of health deviation which is identified as a change within the biological, psychological, sociological, cultural, and/or spiritual aspects of a person resulting in a less than optimal level of functioning.

We believe that, nursing education is a process of life-long learning and should insure students’ access to academic and clinical experience. Each level of nursing education and practice has value and builds on previously learned principles and skills. Nursing education reflects an understanding of the teaching/learning process, and incorporates this process in teaching the components of the nursing curriculum. Nursing education promotes not only the acquisition of knowledge but also the development of mental operations and attitudes that nurture compassion and characterize critical thinking.

We believe that, education is a continuous, dynamic, and interactive teaching/learning process in which the individual’s cognitive, psychomotor and affective behaviors are modified. Optimum learning takes place in an atmosphere of mutual respect and helpfulness. Successful students are characterized by in-depth study participation in class discussions and attainment of clinical expertise associated with professional nursing. Faculties are available for individual assistance and counseling to address academic or clinical issues encountered during the program.

Nursing is a science and art whose main concern with individuals, families and communities along the wellness-illness continuum. Nursing is founded on social and natural sciences, the humanities and mathematics. Nursing is concerned with the health of the whole person.

Nurses employ the nursing process to collaborate with clients in setting health care goals and determining strategies to reduce encounters with stressors and to strengthen abilities to deal with stress. When promotion of maximum levels of wellness is not possible, nurses assist clients to maintain dignity and comfort during the final stages of life.

The LVN working under the direction of the registered nurse or physician is committed to: the promotion and restoration of health, the prevention of illness in individuals, families, groups and communities, and support for a dignified death.
